Fencing: Protect Your Home and Garden

Hello, my name is Graham. This is my blog which contains information about the benefits of installing fencing on your property. For many years, my family and I lived in a property which was open to the rest of the neighbourhood. My wife always said that she didn't like the feeling of walling herself in when she was at home. However, over the past few months, there has been a big increased in the amount of crime in our district. A couple of our neighbours had their homes broken into. It was then I decided to install a large metal fence to protect my family and my home.

Fencing Options for Your Home

The type of fence you put up in your home determines the level of security you get. In addition, it is the first exterior impression of your home.  As such, you should go for a fencing style that provides you with the best security possible as well as style. There are several fencing options you can choose for your home. The styles are distinguished by their materials.

 Wooden Fencing

This is the most common fencing material for residential homes. Within wooden fencing, you still have a wide variety of options to choose from – from pine to redwood. In addition, you can choose any colour you want to complement the overall look of your home or backyard. During installation, it is advisable that the wood is treated with preservatives to protect the fence from ultraviolet light, rot and insects.

You can vary the height of your wooden fence to give you your desired privacy. One of the main advantages of wood fencing is its affordability. In addition, given good care, wooden fencing can last as long as your home.

Metal Fencing

This is another fencing style that gives you a variety of materials to choose from. Some of the metals used include aluminium, wrought iron and chain links.

Aluminium fencing is maintenance free – you only need to paint it and you are done.

Wrought iron fences are strong, giving you enhanced security for your home. The iron can be decorated to add style to your home.

If you want a metal fence that provides a broad view of your home from outside, then chain link fencing should be your choice. These fences are ideal for institutions such as schools because they are cheap and durable.

Vinyl Fencing

This type of fencing is often compared with wooden fencing, but they have several differences. Vinyl fences are stronger and more flexible. One of the advantages with vinyl is that they never need painting.

PVC

This is by far the cheapest means of fencing for homes. You can use this material to replace pickets and wooden stakes. The posts used are PVC sleeves – which go on top of wooden posts as a strategy to add stability to the fence. PVC comes in many colours and is resistant to various elements.

Electric Fencing

This fencing style incorporates use of wireless transmitters to activate wires placed in dug trenches on the boundaries. The fencing also has a collar to relay signals from the wires.  You can use this type of fencing to contain dogs.
